Bioshock 2 is a sequel to a game that didn't need one. The original showed us the bleak and hopeless Rapture and dropped one of the biggest paradigm shifts I've seen this side of Braid. It's a classic that will go down in gaming history as a milestone in in-game storytelling, something the art form had struggled with since its creation.
Because the original is so self-contained and integral to the world of Rapture, it seemed that while a sequel could happen and still make sense, that doesn't mean it should. Even so, Bioshock 2 is an absolutely splendid game that trades a meaningful story for excellent gameplay that improves on the original in every way.
